Strengths: - Buildin tuner - Best price/performace ratio - Fan has no noise - No rainbow - No/very minor lip sync - Great horizontal view angle - Compatable with PC
Weaknesses: Nothing, especially not the picture.
Summary: I spent 6 months researching before buying a DLP TV, ends up with HLR5067 over the Toshiba 52HM84. Now having it for about 2 months and could not be happier. I was originally going to buy HM84 as it is slightly bigger and about $300 cheaper. But once I have seen a side by side comparison in BestBuy, I finally set my mind on Sammy as it has better color/contrast.

I watch HD through HDMI. No lip sync issue on most channels. Only seen once or twice on PBS, but I think this is more like a source problem.

Fan noise is non-existant.

Build quality seems good, no cheaper or fancier than anything else in the same price/quality range.

Strengths: Fantastic Picture, Easy to setup, quiet.
Weaknesses: Necessary remote control features (change source) does not seem to work with other universal remotes, it's remote doesn't cover features needed for my cable box/dvr, lots of remotes needed.
Summary: There are a few features that I have not tried out yet, the built in tuner and PC input options for example, but I have been very happy with all the features I have tried out. Set up was pretty easy, the picture is very sharpe (as long as you select the right aspect ratio, 4:3 or 16:9, for the source). HDTV from the cable box is unbelievable, as is widescreen DVDs, even played from a 4 year old dvd player (using component inputs).

We've been watching HD, Widescreen TV's for more than a year, we quickly settled on DLP technology, and shortly after that the Samsung brand (they were consistently the best looking pictures). We first looked at the HL-N5065, then the HL-P5063/5067, finally when the HL-R5067 came out, we ordered it, each generation has been better than the last, but in our opinion, this brand/series has consistently been the best. We are very happy with our selection - no buyers remorse at all.

Strengths: Exceptional Picture Quality (contrast ratio 2500:1). Great for Gaming. Best unit available for the price.
Weaknesses: TV Guide feature not compatible with Dish Network boxes. Notice slight hum from color wheel inside unit when watching tv with the volume turned down (ie. at night)
Summary: The image quality is the best I've seen. High def programs look amazing. The rear inputs for the tv are abundant with VGA, HDMI, Firewire, and the standard component and composite inputs. This allows for remarkable flexibility. The built-in HD tuner has worked well for me with a standard UHF/VHF antennae. The standard def satellite signal coming in looks very nice free of pixelation and rough edges. Color transition and blending on the SD signals look like any large glass CRT would if not better. Best of all, there's no image lag when playing video games. The contrast on this unit is 2500:1 which gives a noticable improvement over it's predessesor, the HLP5067.

The TV Guide feature is interesting. It allows for a TV Guide screen of my local broadcast channels that I would not normally have since I receive these signals through my antennae and not via a cable or satellite service. The TV Guide program allows for control of both a VCR and Cable box to schedule program recordings. The down side to this feature is that it doesn't seem to support channel listings for my satellite provider (Dish Network). I'm guessing this is not the fault of TV Guide, but rather Dish Network's resistance to allow any inroads to be made in their marketplace. So on my end, the TV Guide will only work with programmed recordings of local SD channels through my VCR and show listings for my local stations.

The remote, as with every other remote I seem to own, does not work very well as a universal remote which leaves me to balance quite a few remotes.

This is a great tv for the money. I give it 4/5 stars due to the improving competition, especially from JVC with their HD-ILA technology. It's worth a side by side comparison.

Strengths: great picture, looks great in the room, great value
Weaknesses: cannot turn DNIe off, panorama mode is awful, vertical viewing angle is not that great, universal remote is limited has limited usability
Summary: Don't get me wrong...I LOVE this tv. It has a great picture and looks great in my living room. We all know how great this TV is already, so I will focus my review on the bad sides I've noticed over the past two weeks.

1. DNIe mode cannot be turned off. As others stated above, there are times when the picture looks better when the DNIe is off (in the demo mode). However, I would like to clarify that I personally like how the DNIe looks most of the time. Having an option to turn it on/off based on user preference would be nice though.

2. Panorama mode is unbearable. This is a mode that stretches a 4:3 image to fill the whole screen. But what it does is it only stretches the edges, so that most things in the center of the screen still look normal. This is fine some of the time, but a lot of times, if a person is on the side of the screen, their face will look normal, but their arm will look as wide as a leg should be. It is awful. I have to say that my friends' Sony and Panasonic TV's do a great stretch-mode, where you can hardly tell it is stretching because it zooms and stretches at the same time. It would be nice if Samsung had such a picture mode too.

3. Vertical viewing angle is not that great. This isn't really a fault of the Samsung in particular, as I think most rear projection TV's are prone to this. Just be sure that you are able to have your TV set at a good height, because the image is noticeably darker when standing up or sitting down on the ground. The horizontal viewing angle is great though.

4. The universal remote feature does not seem to support many brands. For instance, it doesn't support Scientific Atlanta Explorer cable boxes. The remote also doesn't have a button to swap PIP or select a PIP source. Most of the PIP options have to be changed by accessing the menu. This can be annoying. However, the remote does allow you to switch channels on your PIP box if you are using the built-in tuner as your input for the PIP.

Other than these few complaints, I think this TV is perfect. It is very reasonably priced, and Samsung is very good with their in-home warranty from what I've heard. If I had it all to do over again, I would still buy this exact TV. I don't notice any rainbow effects, and HD signals look amazing. Analog signals look decent too in regular 4:3 mode (non-stretched or zoomed).

The complaints I listed above are very minor to me, and you should not hesitate to buy this TV unless any of those issues is really important to you. For most viewers though, I can't think of any reason not to get this TV. If you are set on going with DLP technology, Samsung is the way to go. Also, I've read that the Samsung can be professionally calibrated to produce a perfect 6500k picture, whereas Mitsubishi doesn't come close. So if you are a videophile that wants your TV set up perfectly, I've heard the Samsung service menus allow professionals to fully tweak every little aspect until you get a perfect picture.

Strengths: Built-in ATSC Tuner, Supurb picture quality, Quiet, Good sound quality for built-in speakers
Weaknesses: The remote could use some improvement for controlling other brands (universal). Noticable audio delay.
Summary: Very solid TV overall. Glad that I went with the Samsung DLP. Delivers a solid price:performance. Of course it could always use more digital inputs. Quality of the picture is great, even the black levels are precise.

2 Star ReviewHL-R5067W: Some steps forward. Some steps backward from HL-N Model
Strengths: Firewire (iLink)I/O support with AV/C Control Improved black level over previous 720p models.
Weaknesses: Excessive and constant DNIe processing not always appreciated by all users. No PC-Friendly HDMI mode. Only 2 Component inputs. Picture geometry is poor (trapezoidal and pincusion distortion).
Summary: I know this TV has received many favorable comments here, but I prefer the picture quality of my previous Samsung HL-N model. I've never liked the DNIe signal processing feature. I find that DNIe makes good source look artificial ("clay faces" and excessively emphasised edges) while bringing out the defects in moderate or poor quality source. Unfortunately, Samsung has provided a DNIe demo mode to showcase the feature (sell to undiscerning buyers who prefer dramatic images to accurate ones), but Samsung has provided no user level method to disable it. I always prefer the non-DNIe side of the screen in the demo! If you like the DNIe look, great, but you'd better like it because you can't disable it in this set like you could with previous Sammies.

My second major complaint is the picture geometry. My set has 3/8" of pincusion/trapezoid distortion on one side (the image is narrower at the top) and 1/4" on the other. All DLPs rear projector sets have some pincusion but this amount of pincushion is quite irratating--particularly when viewing 4:3 source in native (unstretched) aspect ratio, or on screen menus, or computer screen desktops. I've heard that Samsung considers up to 1/2" to be "normal," but I've not confirmed this with Samsung.

Speaking of computer desktop screens--the HDMI input does not have a PC-friendly mode and the TV overscans about 5% of the image from all sides. This makes desktop icons and toolbars inaccessible. However, the VGA input provides an underscanning mode that works quite well for a computer connection. Don't expect computer desktop and office application display to look good with DNIe, though. Fonts don't map 1:1 with pixels with the DNIe processing and artificial white pockets are created near high contrast borders along fonts. DNIe == "Distortion and Noise Injected Everywhere" :)

The color decoder continues to be slightly off, as was the case with my previous HL-N model. The problem is not "red push" but rather an error in the greens. It's easy to detect with a simple calibration DVD like Avia or Digital Video Essential. When viewing non-test material, a slight greenish tint is often present the darker gray or brown areas of the image.

On the upside, black levels have been improved over previous models. The light output continues to be impressive. STBs and D-VHS decks can be connected via firewire so that viewing and recording is controlled through AV/C commands from the TV. (Firewire is the forth type of HD-capable input on the set--the other three being HDMI, VGA, and component Y-Pb-Pr.)

While the first Samsung 720p DLP sets targetted early adopter video enthusiasts, if not videophiles, recent sets have taken a cost reduced path toward the mainstream TV buyer. Although prices have fallen in the 720p DLP product segment, I'm afraid I'll probably still have to spend something closer to the $3100 I paid for my N model, nearly 2 years ago (if not more), in order to obtain similar picture quality--new features and blacker blacks notwithstanding!

Strengths: Picture Quality, Analog Fine Tuning, On-Screen TV guide, Sound Selection, Favorite Channel Selection
Weaknesses: PIP Remote Control Access, Lack of Channel Screen Display, Weak Remote Secondary Device Selection, Narrow Viewing Angle
Summary: My purchase of this Samsung 50" DLP TV has been a great investment. It is lightweight and has many special features. A side-panel jack conveniently located for computer or camcorder hook-up. The owners manual is easy to understand and the best one I have used. The picture quality is excellent when viewing head-on. The picture does suffer when you increase the viewing angle.

Strengths: Picture quality is great, light weight, sleek design, and set is very slim.
Weaknesses: None so far with the unit. User manual could be better.
Summary: I'm not a big person when it comes to features. The most important thing to me is picture quaility and this unit has great picture quaility. The HLR 5067w is also afforadable, relative to the other HDTVs out on the market. I really have no complaints about the unit itself whatsoever. The only negative thing about the unit is that the user manual could be better written. Other than that, I would suggest to everyone that they give this unit a look before purchasing a new HDTV unit. Good luck!

Strengths: Weight, picture, sound, price/value
Weaknesses: Viewing angle associated with DLP and inability to be at a party and say the word "Plasma" to impress my friends.
Summary: I am not a big TV guy but decided that I had to make the plunge to bigger, better TV/programing and as becuase I don't care about TV, it was a hard decision to drop over a grand on something I barely use. The point, I researched the hell out of TV's in the $1500 to $2000 price range, funny thing.......this TV kept popping up as being very, very good.

So I work for Intel.........yep, I really, really, really wanted to go with the LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) for a couple reasons: 1. It is supposed to be the cutting edge technology and 2. It sounds cool. Unfortunately, sounding cool and cool, performance were not the same thing. It is true that LCoS has an amazing picture, but if you watch the screen during zooming in and out or complex images, you will see a "shimmer" basically the picture will seem to stall occasionally to readjust focus. Also, the processor just can't keep up with fast moving action from what I could see..........this left black streaks on fast moving objects.

So enough about that: I got the TV after hearing all the cool stuff about it and the 50' was based on my entertainment center so don't read into that too much. I plugged it in and the picture pretty much sucked, just like you would expect from analog transmission. I did the trip to Best Buy, got the HD anntenna and screwed with that stuff a while and then decided........why the hell did you get an HD TV if you are NOT going to suck it up and get HD programming. Well, I sucked it up and all I have to say is..........LOVE IT! I pretty much wont even watch regular TV anymore. The great thing is that more and more HD channels are coming on line which makes my research, my recent expense of $1,300, and my limited TV time WELL WORTH IT.

Note: if you are smart and nice it is easy to negotiate a 3 year warranty that includes bulb replacement. Also, if you are going to be low rent and don't plan on getting HD Programming, don't even consider any of the choices out there unless you are a big gamer or DVD addict. It is pointless to drop that kind of cash for the picture you will get. If you don't believe me, when you are shopping, have the sales associate switch the TV to local programming rather than the DVD or HD system that is standard in the store......that will give you a true apple to apple comparision.

If you haven't researched it yet:

LCD- Cool factor and picture very good, cost expensive but coming down, weight, relatively heavy, major con, screen burn in and diminished "vivid color" as time progresses

Plasma- Cool factor.........get some Spinners for your mini-van while your making the purchase. The though of a cord running up the wall to the mounting area seemed sorta low rent. Pretty much a disposable TV after 6-8 years but by that time you'll be ready for another one.........just a lot of money to spend knowing it will end up in the trash.

Strengths: Amazing picture quality. Great black levels and contrast. Quiet. Built in speakers sound nice for watching tv. Built in ATSC Tuner!
Weaknesses: I notice rainbow effect occasionally with white lines on black. No one else seems to notice any. Remote doesnt control my LG DVD Player beyond Power On/Off.
Summary: The fan fan broke within 30 days which caused overheating. I exchanged the unit. New unit works flawlessly. In my experience this would not be a good set for gaming since there is a noticable delay. Another HDMI/DVI input would be nice.

Strengths: Picture clarity, non-reflective soft screen, modern design
Weaknesses: Clear picture not too effective without HD tv access, figures appear wider than normal
Summary: Very satisfied with my purchase. The picture doesn't seem as sharp, but very clear. I should probably write another review once I seen it with HD tv to get the full effective of the DLP projection. But all in all, love the TV and would recommend it.

2 Star ReviewNot for gamers
Strengths: Everything about this TV is awesome except...
Weaknesses: Extreme video lag
Summary: No complaints about this TV except gaming. Image, inputs, sound, and everything are great.

Remote isn't well designed, but not that big of a deal to me.

What kills me is this game consoles are unplayable on this and all Samsung DLP's. DO NOT BUY THIS TV if you(or any kids) play a lot of games. I now have the beautiful 50" sitting in my living room with an old 29" on the floor next to it just for games. Weak.

Strengths: Good value, excelent product.
Weaknesses: Careful where you buy it from.
Summary: The TV is great, price is too. Be careful though, you may buy product now, the retailer might send it after price has dropped. ButterflyPhoto did just this, it took two months for it to get there. My suggestion is if you dont get a tracking # within a couple of weeks, consider store prices and cancel your order. Other than that, buy this TV.

Strengths: Samsung has it's own digital cable tuner and the stations that are broadcasting in HDTV come in so clear.
Weaknesses: I don't see one
Summary: I've had this TV for almost 2 months now. I am really pleased with it. After months of research, I decided to buy HLR5067W. If you want high quality picture, connect HDMI connection. If you are buying extended warranty make sure Bulb is covered in that extended warranty.
