Maxtor External 100GB Hard Drive

Strengths: Fast (7200 RPM is great)

Weakness: Heavy and large.

I really like this drive. I use it for my laptop that has an 80GB drive. This is great for backup and storage. I wouldn't bring this with my laptop, but it's great for copying backup files, music, movies, or any other type of large media files. I would recommend this for anyone who wants an external drive that's mostly for backup and mass storage.

This hard drive is good, but it is large and heavy. For this reason, it is not as portable as some other drives might be. Even with these down sides, it is still well worth it for me.

Maxtor 3200 100GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Slim and Fits easily, very quiet

This is my first External harddrive, the installation was as simple as using a Flash drive. Insert the USB cable and you are all set. Windows didnot have any problem. Very good source for backup of files.

good quality

Strengths: it does a nice job

Weakness: no case for the drive

Basically this exteral hard drive does a nice job for basic functions. So far it has been working very well with my laptop. Two thing disappoints me a bit are that the size is bigger than expected and it doesn't have a soft case for the drive.

Nice drive and low price

Strengths: Quite and fast

Weakness: Short warranty. No switch to turn it off.

Very nice and quite. I can't hear a thing from it on my desk. I hope it has a switch can turn it off when not using it. Right now, I have to unplug the power cord.

good external hard drive

Strengths: It runs fast and quietly

Weakness: no case and the size is big

So far this external hard drive has been working properly for me. It is quite easy to set up. However, the size of this hard drive is bigger and it is heavier than expected. It would be nicer if a soft case went along this drive. My computer recognizes this hard drive quite fast. It does all basic functions you need.

Good basic drive

Strengths: Fast data transfer, stable, and quiet

Weakness: Bulky, no power switch, and no fan

This is basically a regular internal 100gb maxtor hard drive inside an external enclosure. The data transfer speed is very good. It is pretty quiet also. However the drive does not have a power switch so once it is plugged in it is always on. Also it does not have a fan and it is hard to say if there is any overhead problem. So far so good.

Great Hard Drive!

Strengths: It's great on the go and it's fast.

Weakness: none so far.

This 100gb hard drive is very good for the price. Great company and warranty. Never had any probles with Maxtor hard drives. For what I paid for, I give it an A.

Affordable option for a backup drive or extention to...

Strengths: easy installation, vertical stand, quick solution to running out of space, great back-up drive.

Weakness: bulkier than some of the external hard drives these days, sometimes slow to cue up a file

- First off this drive is very easy to set up with windows xp. There are no cds or drivers this hard drive is literally plug in and begin. The system took care of making the hard drive immediately available.
- The hard drive is kind of bulky for hard drives that are 100 gb these days
- This drive would work great as a backup drive or with utilities such as ghost.
-The USB cord that comes with the hard drive is pretty decent in terms of size. You could hide this hard drive in a drawer under your computer without any problems.
- This hard drive is overall relatively simple. There are only two plugs, one for the power and one for the USB connection that goes to your computer.

The right external drive for me

Strengths: Very convenience to carry, can stand upright to save space.

Weakness: Not found yet.

I bought this to back up my data from the machine I need to return to the project. It is very convenient to use in both Windows and Linux. Solve my problem indeed. 100G is big enough to carry all of my data. Love it.

Good value for the money

Strengths: Quiet, large storage capacity, reasonable size

Weakness: None worth mentioning

I got this drive to back up my photo files from my computer hard disk. It was heavier than I expected when I received the box, but it seems to be well made. I hooked it right up and it was quick and easy to transfer files over to it. It fits in a small space on my desk and is unobtrusive and quiet. I would recommend for any home users who want a good back-up alternative, but it may be a little heavy to go on the road with.

External 100GB Hard Drive

Strengths: 7200 rpm, 8mb buffer, 100GB

Weakness: Uses usb and not firewire

The hard drive is a fast 7200 rmp with 8 mb buffer. The 100gb external storage is enough for any home use. Its not really big, so those who need space should get it, and it doesn't get really hot. The only real drawback is that it uses the usb 2.0 which is good enough but when you transfer about 30gb of data, it takes a while about 1 hour.

Easy Storage

Strengths: Easy to use, slim/clean unit, quiet operation

Weakness: None that I have found

I am very happy with the Maxtor 3200. All I needed to do to use it was to plug in the power line and connect it to the USB port of my computer. It transferred 10 GB in a few minutes. It was so quiet I couldn't even tell it was running.

I plan to use it strictly for file/photo backup purposes and I am very glad I bought it.

Maxtor 100GB external Drive

Strengths: Small size, user friendly, looks, speed

Weakness: Could use an outer soft case, Non compatibility with all versions of windows, No firewire

I got mine for an incredible deal at office depot earlier this week. It works well most of the time, however the hard drive will occasionally stop responding while it is plugged into my computer, forcing me to pull the power to reset it.

Maxtor 3200 100GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Very good looking design

Weakness: Bulky, Only 1 Yr Warranty

The only two things I like about this drive is the price and look. This is quite a bulky drive compared to other external hard drives. The other drawback is that maxtor only gives one year warranty with the drive. But these are minor things compared to the price of this drive. In general the hard drive prices are falling significantly that you can by 1/2 Terra byte for $200 only. This drive's performance is good. Only 8GB buffer and USB 2.0 data transfer is ok for 100GB drive. Windows did not have any problem detecting it. Just hooked it up and I was using it within minutes. Overall I am a happy buyer.

Personal Storage 3200 External 100GB Hard Drive (USB...

Strengths: Good Value

Weakness: Need to carry around

on a price/value scale this is an amazing device.

my only complaints would be you should carry the drivers with you on CD or otherwise.. some versions of windows just dont like this drive. I have seen computers accept it the first time as an "USB mass storage device" and then not after that... so some versions of windows just do not like this drive as a USB plug in. Having the drivers on hand solves the problem.

On computers that recognize the drive? excellence. It is not that fast unfortunately to say run an emulated game system... but for basic function it really does a nice job. Don't expect it to be like a flash drive/mem stick.. more like a hybrid of a traditional drive/mem stick. The fact that it is so small is incredible.

one other complaint ? no case. it should have at least a soft shell case. Obviously people are buying it for portability.. a case would be a nice option. Personally I went to staples and bought a caselogic softshell case for $10.99.. I think it was a case for an MP3 player.. but it fit.

I liked it while it lasted

Strengths: Great speed and usability.

Weakness: Bulky and always on.

I've owned the drive for about a year or two and used it as a means for backup and transfer between machines when repairing. It basically stayed plugged in throughout its life. It functioned well and was fast while in use but now is out of commission. I attribute this to its 'always on' state which I didn't assume would be a problem when purchasing.
Although I rarely ported it around, I wasn't ever too happy about the separate power and USB connection and the bulky case with the 'foot' that constantly fell off. Since my intent was to plug it in, leave it in one location, and bring machines to it, the price was more of a factor of my purchasing it than the size.

The price was right and the it's speed was good but don't expect to leave it on all the time and have a reliable drive for backup/archiving files.

Useless

Strengths: quiet, streamlined

Weakness: no software, no icon.

I spent three days searching info because when I plugged it in nothing opened,no icon, nothing in Add/Remove hardware, etc. After much frustration and time I was told that I had to move the icon from My Computer to desktop, open it,then drag and drop files into it. I right clicked and I see that I can send the files to E: but this is supposed to be a very user friendly plug n play. It was from ebay and the seller won't take it back so I'm re-selling it. Disgusted and angry.

Not as good as i'd liked.

Strengths: Good prices, small size

Weakness: poor quality, sometimes loud, heavy

I bought this from Best Buy and used it for around 6-7 months and it failed on me. I never dropped or tipped it over and one day it just failed on me. All my data was lost, but the with the warranty, the manufacturer is willing to replace it.

Maxtor 3200 - a bit flaky w/XP-Pro

Strengths: Quiet, nice looking, rapid reading and writing, minimum of controls

Weakness: Works inconsistently w/XP-Pro

Runs wonderfully with my two laptops w/XP-Home Edition, -BUT- sometimes is not recognized by my XP-Pro system. When it -is- recognized, will often "disappear' after some random amount of time.

Bad news

Strengths: Vanilla external HD.

Weakness: It doesn't work.

I bought this HD to back-up all my data prior to a reformat of my desktop. It worked fine and I transfered all my data. After I reformatted and set back up my desktop, I tried plugging in the MAXTOR 3200. No dice. It isn't recognized. The maxtor tech support was useless. Their solution was a trip to the geek squad at Best Buy or send it back to them and lose all my data. Thanks guys.

Nicely made external hard drive

Strengths: Stand, quiet, ease of use

Weakness: Somewhat large

This portable hard drive is well made, and very easy to use. Just plug in the power and USB cable, and you are set. Although a bit bulky, it is still very portable, and the stand is a nice added feature for those who want to either display it or keep it in a tight spot.

Strengths: Transfers data alot faster than expected. Simple tou use

Weakness: None yet

Anyone who stores photos, music and important files ought to have one. It's quick and easy to use and very reasonably priced considering the cost of losing the data on your computer.

I am happy with it

Strengths: easy to use very quite reasonably good speed of operation

Weakness: big size

Over all I like this hard drive. Earlier I had WD external drive but it was too much bulky and ugly looks. This is very good piece. Very quite operation. The price is also reasonable.
A case would be a nice option.

Fast and Quiet

Strengths: It is very slim, fast and quiet

Weakness: None so far but firewire could be better

I have plugged it in and start to use with my laptop for back up issues. It is fast if you think it just use USB not firewire and extremely quiet. you can not even hear that it is working. So i am happy with it.

Excellent External Backup

Strengths: Fast connection, Fast reading, nice design

Weakness: None that I can find.

This is a great external drive. My computer picks it up quickly and it reads the drive very fast. It is nice and slim and very quiet, which is great if you want to leave it plugged into your PC. I use it mainly for data backup. Great deal from Maxtor!
